Leaving the Water Tribe lands takes Yona's group toward a border town and a child named Karugan. This paperback begins another travel problem after the Sensui conflict, with the party trying to help someone reach home. It is a useful change of setting for readers following the journey in order. The apparent simplicity of escorting a child is the premise; the complication introduced by crossing the border belongs in the spoiler note.

Karugan is encountered in an Earth Tribe town near the national border. When the travelers take him across it, a Dragon Warrior unexpectedly collapses. The description establishes the sequence without proving a general rule about every Dragon's power, so that rule should not be invented here. What the incident does provide is a limit to the group's confidence in its own strength. Helping someone home initially appears to be a question of escort and direction. A companion becoming incapacitated turns the helpers themselves into people who need an answer.
