North Kai's interest in the Dragon Warriors makes Yona's group a target in a planned attack on Kohka. The paperback shifts the military problem toward possession of the companions themselves, with Ying Kuelbo central to the threat. Read it after the Fire Tribe and border material. This is a change in the terms of the conflict: the group is no longer only deciding where to intervene.

Yona and Jaeha are taken to Kai, and Hak considers working with the Kohka army to rescue them. The proposed cooperation is the argument for this volume. A political relationship that would be unacceptable in ordinary circumstances becomes thinkable when the immediate task is getting someone back. That does not make the earlier grievances disappear. It changes which cost Hak is considering first. The book's premise therefore turns a rescue into a test of what loyalty requires when the available resources belong to people he would not otherwise choose as partners.
