Your Lie in April begins with a pianist who has stopped playing, making this the starting point for the standard manga. Kosei Arima meets violinist Kaori Miyazono after his mother's death has driven him away from music. The useful buying distinction is between this single volume and Omnibus 1, which collects Vols. 1 to 3. Choose the single if you want to try the premise before committing to that longer opening stretch.

Kosei's ability is already established when the story begins. The problem is his relationship to the instrument, which makes a simple training narrative an inadequate description of the premise. Kaori brings a different approach to performance into contact with someone for whom playing has become painful. That contrast gives the opening its critical question: encouragement can create an opportunity without removing the history attached to it. Kodansha's synopsis establishes the encounter and Kosei's withdrawal; it does not establish that meeting Kaori cures him. Reading the introduction as a cure would give the violinist credit before the story has done the work.
