Evangelion Manga Buying Guide: Five Collections, Fourteen Volumes

Map the five English collected Evangelion paperbacks to their fourteen original volumes and avoid the last-book numbering trap.

Last updated October 8, 2026

For the collected English Evangelion manga, buy books 1–5 in order. The first four books are 3-in-1 collections, and the fifth is a 2-in-1 collection of original volumes 13 and 14. The five-book route therefore reaches fourteen original volumes, not fifteen. Be careful with a seller who uses “3-in-1” as the name for every book in the line.

Five collected books, fourteen original volumes

Collected spineOriginal-volume contentsBook label
Collected 1Original Volumes 1–33-in-1
Collected 2Original Volumes 4–63-in-1
Collected 3Original Volumes 7–93-in-1
Collected 4Original Volumes 10–123-in-1
Collected 5Original Volumes 13–142-in-1

These specific contents subtitles come from Simon & Schuster’s distributor listings. The final book’s subtitle is more useful than the generic paragraph on that same page saying each book contains three originals. A broad description of an edition family should yield to the itemized contents of the particular book you are buying.

Which number should you shop for?

A new reader starts at collected book 1. A collector who owns collected 1–4 continues with collected 5. Someone owning historical original singles 1–12 also continues with collected 5, because its stated contents begin at 13. That is a coverage decision; it does not establish that an old and a new English printing use identical lettering or wording.

If you own original singles 1–7, collected book 3 repeats original 7 while adding 8 and 9. If you own original 1–9, collected book 4 adds 10–12 without that repeat. Write down original-volume coverage when mixing printings, because “Volume 3” on an older single and on a collected book points to different amounts of the manga.

Choose the format for a concrete reason

VIZ credits the collected manga’s story and art to Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. Its first collected paperback is listed at 5¾ × 8⅝ inches and 524 pages. Those publisher specifications tell you the size and contents commitment of that purchase. They do not tell you whether the binding will suit your hands or whether a particular used copy has suffered damage.

Choose the collected route if you want to plan a five-book shelf rather than assemble historical singles. Choose an individual old printing when matching an existing set matters to you, but verify its number, language, and condition directly with the seller. A larger collected page count does not by itself prove additional story beyond the original-volume ranges in the table.

How the manga relates to the anime

The distributor describes this manga as an adaptation of the animated series. That identifies the relationship without supplying an episode-to-chapter handoff. Start the manga from its opening if you want Sadamoto’s telling; do not use an anime episode number as a collected-book number.

The Evangelion watch-order guide handles the television and film routes. This purchase table handles the original manga volumes inside the English collected paperbacks. It makes no promise that finishing a particular anime version means you have already read the opening of a given manga book.

Before buying a complete lot, check all five spines and confirm that the final book is present. A listing that shows four “3-in-1” books has not shown the ending. Use the Evangelion catalog to distinguish the collected route from differently titled related books, and ask for a clear contents or ISBN photograph when a seller’s title is vague.
