Piccolo: Responsibility After Training
Piccolo’s protection of Gohan changes the meaning of their training. Taking responsibility requires more than demanding that a child become stronger.

Piccolo becomes responsible for Gohan when the boy's survival matters beyond his usefulness as a fighter. Their training is difficult to defend simply by pointing to the strength it eventually produces.
The teacher is never as absent as he appears
The official manga Saiyan-arc showcase describes Piccolo leaving Gohan to survive alone, secretly providing apples, then training him personally. When Nappa later attacks Gohan, Piccolo takes the fatal blast himself.
The apples complicate the apparent independence of the first arrangement. Gohan's survival is being watched and assisted, even while the test appears to require that he manage alone. Piccolo retains responsibility in practice before he is willing to make it visible. That can be read as affection he has difficulty acknowledging, but it also means the result cannot honestly be credited to unsupported self-reliance.
This distinction matters because harsh training often acquires a flattering explanation after it works. The pupil's improvement becomes proof that every hardship was necessary. Hidden assistance makes that explanation less secure: what looks like a successful ordeal may depend on the teacher quietly limiting the damage.
A pupil is more than an investment
Piccolo's final intervention changes who bears the cost. Training asks Gohan to become capable of facing danger. Shielding him accepts that the child remains worth protecting when the demands of the battle exceed what he can safely manage.
Our reading is that this is the relationship's strongest ethical change. A teacher can value a student because considerable effort has gone into preparing him. That remains an investment calculation. Accepting a cost the student cannot repay makes a different claim about why he matters. Gohan does not have to demonstrate that his survival will produce a useful return in the moment he is protected.
Protection does not acquit the whole method
There is a real emergency behind the training, and a reading that ignores it would make Piccolo's choices artificially easy to condemn. Preparation can be urgent without being gentle. Yet urgency cannot establish that every available method is equally justified.
The later sacrifice therefore need not become a verdict that the earlier treatment was good. It can instead reveal a changed standard: the person being trained has acquired a claim on the trainer that exceeds the training's purpose. Piccolo's importance as a mentor lies partly in that revision. His most consequential lesson is not another demand that Gohan endure more. It is his own decision to bear what Gohan cannot.
