“Of course not, people could say all kinds of things. Just don't hang out with me for the next couple of days, all right?”

“Now listen, my name is Naota. Don't EVER call me Ta-kun again!”
Mamimi has been calling for Naota's brother when he insists that he is the one present to save her. His demand about the nickname makes that rescue personal. Being available is no longer enough if she is looking through him toward someone else. I would not call the outburst simple selflessness: he wants recognition as part of helping. That mixture makes it more convincing. He can care about her danger and still refuse the part she has assigned him.

“Nothing amazing happens here. Everything is ordinary. We crossed the bridge as usual, and before we knew it the seasons had changed. Mamimi left town. She said she wanted to be a photographer. I don't know what happened to her after that.”
The opening episode also has Naota call his town ordinary, before describing the Medical Mechanica factory and the steam that covers everything. Repeating the claim at the end no longer makes it a reliable inventory of the place. The departure he reports immediately afterward changes who belongs to that ordinary life. I read the refrain as a way of containing change, rather than proof that nothing mattered. His account also stops where his knowledge stops: Mamimi has a future that he cannot narrate.
Ninamori asks whether they will keep this from people at school, then answers Naota's demand for distance by asking if tonight is still allowed. His concern about gossip deserves some sympathy: privacy is a reasonable request. But he adds a public separation she never asked for, making discretion look like embarrassment at being seen together. Her follow-up reveals the cost of that extra condition. He gets to manage appearances while she has to negotiate for company.
