“You really are cute. You look a lot like someone I know... I've heard a lot about you from Tomoyo, but she never told me your last name. Would you care to tell me what it is?”

Fujitaka calls before Sakura finishes giving her surname. Sonomi's request for a small piece of information is overtaken by a voice, and she responds with a scream and his name. The recognition arrives through the interruption, rather than through the answer she asked for. Her earlier account has carefully separated familiarity from knowledge. Tomoyo has told her about Sakura, and Sakura resembles someone she knows, but the missing surname has kept those impressions from becoming a clear family connection. That gap lets the scene make recognition an event instead of something Sonomi possesses from the start. Nothing here establishes why Tomoyo omitted the surname, and assigning her a scheme would spoil the uncertainty the exchange actually uses. Sonomi can be warmly acquainted with a description and still be unprepared for the person who answers to Dad. The interruption supplies the fact that changes what she thought she was seeing. The scene also lets politeness precede surprise. Sonomi has already thanked Sakura for being Tomoyo’s friend. Whatever the recognition changes, that earlier welcome has been spoken before the surname can reorganize the encounter.
