“I perceive that you have a big heart, Syaoran. Are you worried about such a little thing?”
Wei says the cake is filled with Meiling's feelings. When Syaoran remains hesitant, he invokes the boy's big heart and asks whether such a little thing should matter. Praise becomes a way to make an objection look inconsistent with the character being praised. Syaoran's answer tries to identify a different problem: Meiling keeps grabbing him. She then appears and tackles him, giving the complaint an immediate referent. Wei's appeal has not shown that the concern is trivial; it has made being generous sound incompatible with voicing it. That is a poor use of an otherwise attractive virtue. Someone can value another person's feelings without agreeing to every form in which those feelings arrive. The line's warmth conceals a demand for accommodation before the objection has been properly heard. Syaoran has to struggle past the flattering description to explain what is bothering him.
