“Zechs Merquise is dead.”
Said by the man himself, about a name that was already an alias. He is a prince whose country was destroyed, operating under a mask and a false identity for years, and here he discards the false identity too. Three episodes later he is going by his true name, Milliardo Peacecraft, as the Sanc Kingdom's ambassador, and he later leads White Fang's war under it.

“Just watch me, I am going to live...right till the bitter end!”
From the man who spent the series discarding names and courting death in every engagement, this is the reversal, and it lands the same way Heero's does in the same episode — as a decision to keep existing after a run of behavior that suggested otherwise. The phrasing gives it away though. Bitter end, not simply the end: he is not choosing life so much as refusing to be finished before the argument is settled, which is the same combativeness in a different direction. Compare his earlier claim that some lessons require risking your life. He has now spent the whole series testing it and arrived at the least glamorous possible conclusion, which is that surviving is harder.

Elegant, and the series is quietly building a case against it for forty-nine episodes. He is a man who has swapped names and faces to keep fighting a war his family lost, and who requires the stakes to stay lethal because a lesson learned any other way would not settle anything for him. The formulation is self-serving in a way he never notices — it converts a personal need for combat into a general principle about knowledge. Set it against Relena, who is doing the opposite work with none of the glamour and considerably better results. The show's actual position is that the lessons available at the risk of your life are a narrow and expensive subset, and that most of the ones that matter are not on it.
