Reading Time Without Manga Captions

A repair sequence in Hunter x Hunter separates evidence that an action has progressed from guesses about how long it takes.

A manga can establish that time has passed without telling us how much. Changes in an object or a body may establish a before and after, while leaving the duration between them open.

Follow the changing condition

On reader pages 10–13 of VIZ's Hunter x Hunter Volume 7 preview, a woman repairs Hisoka's severed arms. The sequence moves through preparation, stitching and his testing a repaired hand before returning to the other arm.

The progress of the task supplies temporal information. One condition has to be reached before another action becomes possible. Our reading follows that dependency: the resulting movement is evidence of progress through the repair, even without a date or a clock.

This is more precise than assigning a fixed unit of time to each panel. A small image can isolate a detail of an ongoing action. Another image can show a later result. Their sizes alone do not reveal that one contains more seconds than the other.

Distinguish order from duration

Three questions are useful here. What happened first? What has changed by the next relevant image? What, if anything, specifies the interval? The first two can have clear answers while the third remains uncertain. Uncertainty about elapsed time does not make the order equally uncertain.

That distinction prevents a common mistake in close reading: turning a sequence of images into a timing claim. A reader may experience a page as quick because its action is easy to follow. That describes the experience of reading, not necessarily the time the characters spend on the task.

Identify what the page leaves out

An omitted intermediate movement does not automatically imply a long gap. The reader may be expected to connect two stages of one continuous activity. Equally, showing several stages does not guarantee that every moment between them has been represented.

The strongest account names the visible change instead of supplying an imaginary stopwatch. A repair has reached a stage where movement is possible; a second task follows the first. Those observations remain useful even when the reader cannot calculate the duration.

For a quotation taken from such a sequence, locate it by the stage of the action as well as by page. An instruction before a result and a judgment after it can carry different authority. The panel-reading guide establishes reading order; this additional question asks what the changing state of the scene permits us to infer about time.
