Samurai Champloo Watch Order: 26 Episodes, One Recap
Watch all 26 episodes in number order. Why the Japanese broadcast stopped at episode 17, what the second season was, and which episode is a recap.
Watch the 26 episodes in number order. That is the whole answer for Samurai Champloo, and it is short because the franchise is small: Anime News Network's encyclopedia lists one 26-episode TV series by Manglobe, directed by Shinichirō Watanabe, and no films or OVAs; the only related entry is a manga adaptation. The confusion people run into comes from how the show was first broadcast, and from one episode that is mostly a recap.
The broadcast: interrupted, not reordered
Samurai Champloo premiered on Fuji TV on May 19, 2004. Fuji TV's own program page still lists its broadcast as having ended on September 22, 2004, and its dated episode pages run from episode 1 on May 19 to episode 17 on September 22, in number order. That left nine episodes unaired.
Anime News Network, relaying a fan message-board report in August 2004, said that Fuji TV would drop the show after episode 17 and that the full 26 episodes would air on the satellite channel BS Fuji, though it noted at the time that the cancellation was not yet confirmed. In October 2004 it reported that the official site was announcing a "second season" for January. ANN's encyclopedia dates episodes 18 to 26 in Japan from January 22 to March 18, 2005.
So some of the series did air late, about four months after the rest. We found no evidence that any episodes aired out of order in Japan: Fuji TV's dated pages for episodes 1 to 17 follow the numbering, and the delayed episodes were the last nine. The so-called second season is simply episodes 18 to 26 of the same series. There is no reason to watch in any order but the numbering.
English-speaking viewers met the show on a different schedule. Geneon's first US DVD was released on January 11, 2005, before the Japanese broadcast had finished, and ANN's encyclopedia dates the Adult Swim broadcast from May 14, 2005, to March 9, 2006.
Episode 12 is the recap
Episode 12, "The Disorder Diaries," is the one entry you could skip. Fuji TV's synopsis has the three staying at an inn for once; while Fuu is in the bath, Jin and Mugen find her diary and read it without asking, and it turns out to be frank about men, food and the journey. In Carlo Santos's ANN review of the third DVD, it is "a clip episode that summarizes the series so far." He calls it "a fun way of reliving events through Fuu's eyes" and also "a cheap excuse to get out of producing fresh animation and story." Both are fair descriptions. Skip it if you are short on time; watch it if you like these three bickering, because that is what it is made of.
Can you skip other episodes?
Technically, yes. Santos describes the series as "telling stand-alone stories that are linked by the trio's ongoing journey," and James Beckett's ANN review of the complete-series Blu-ray notes that "most of the episodes are standalone," which is why they "can vary wildly in quality." But the journey links them. The multi-part stories should always be watched together. By ANN's episode titles they are:
- Episodes 3 and 4, "Hellhounds for Hire," parts 1 and 2
- Episodes 13 and 14, "Misguided Miscreants," parts 1 and 2
- Episodes 16 and 17, "Lullabies of the Lost," verses 1 and 2
- Episodes 20 and 21, "Elegy of Entrapment," verses 1 and 2
- Episodes 24 to 26, "Evanescent Encounter," parts 1 to 3, the finale
Episodes 13 and 14 are worth singling out. Fuji TV's synopsis has Mugen run into Koza, a girl he knew as a child, and Mukuro, an old companion who is now a pirate boss. Beckett singles out the two-parter about Mugen's history as "one of the series' best stories."
The order in one place
Episodes 1 to 26, in order, with episode 12 optional. There is nothing else to add. If you came to Champloo from Watanabe's earlier series, our Cowboy Bebop quotes sit alongside the Samurai Champloo quote collection, the best Samurai Champloo quotes, and the pages for Mugen, Jin and Fuu.
