Soul Eater Manga Buying Guide: Paperbacks or Perfect Edition

Compare the two Soul Eater editions by stated format features and directly checked chapter boundaries, including three endpoint examples.

Last updated October 8, 2026

Choose between Yen Press’s original Soul Eater paperbacks and Square Enix’s Perfect Edition by format and chapter coverage, not by matching the same number on their spines. Square Enix labels Perfect Edition 17 the final volume. Yen Press Volume 25 includes the final chapter. Both routes reach the ending, but the books divide the intervening chapters differently.

Two editions with different boundaries

RouteEndpointOpening purchase
Yen Press paperbacksVolume 25One original paperback at a time
Square Enix Perfect EditionVolume 17Approximately 1½ original volumes per collected book

Yen Press lists paperback 1 at 5 × 7.5 inches. Square Enix lists Perfect Edition 1 as a 5¾ × 8¼-inch hardcover. Those publisher specifications give a concrete format difference. Larger pages or hardcover presentation may be reasons to choose Perfect Edition, while a smaller individual purchase may be a reason to start with the paperback.

Square Enix advertises original serialization color pages, new cover art, and an updated translation and lettering. That establishes the publisher’s stated edition features. It does not establish that a particular sentence is translated better, or that every scene has changed. If exact wording matters to you, compare the identified editions’ passages rather than infer differences from the format label.

Why “one and a half” is not a switching formula

Yen Press Volume 1 has three prologues followed by numbered Chapter 1. Perfect Edition 1 includes the opening character sections and numbered chapters 1–3. These Yen Press contents and Square Enix’s preview contents show that even the opening books finish at different numbered chapters.

Multiplying a Perfect Edition spine number by 1.5 gives an estimate, not a guaranteed stopping point in the paperback line. A shared ending chapter is the useful check. It tells you where two stretches finish; it does not mean that each individual book in one stretch contains whole books from the other edition.

Three checked endpoint comparisons

Yen Press bookPerfect Edition bookShared ending
32Chapter 9
64Chapter 22
2517Chapters 108–112 plus the unnumbered final chapter in each ending book

Yen Press 3 contains chapters 6–9. Perfect Edition 2 contains chapters 4–9. Those two books share chapter 9 as their endpoint while starting at different chapters, so Perfect 2 is not simply another binding of paperback 3.

Yen Press 6 contains chapters 19–22. Perfect Edition 4 contains chapters 17–22. Again, a matching end makes a useful checkpoint without making the individual books equal in coverage.

Yen Press 25 contains numbered chapters 108–112 and the final chapter. Perfect Edition 17 contains numbered chapters 108–112 and the final chapter. At this ending purchase, the chapter blocks match. These contents comparisons concern coverage, not identical English dialogue or identical extras.

How to choose without duplicating a stretch

If you are beginning, choose one opening edition and continue in it until you have a specific reason to change. If you already own paperbacks, identify the last numbered chapter you own and check the proposed Perfect Edition book’s contents. A seller’s “Volume 4” label is insufficient without the edition name. Use the Soul Eater catalog and Perfect Edition inventory for the physical books, then compare the next required chapter with the contents. The endpoint examples above are checked comparisons, not a promise of an entire crossover table.
