Tokyo Ghoul Manga Buying Guide: Original and :re
Buy Tokyo Ghoul’s fourteen-volume original run and sixteen-volume :re sequel without confusing their restarted numbering or overlapping purchases.
Start Tokyo Ghoul with the original series, then continue into Tokyo Ghoul: re. The two English paperback boxes collect different runs: fourteen original volumes and sixteen sequel volumes. A box labeled complete needs its full title beside it.
Two boxes, two numbered sequences
| Package | Included run | Box ISBN-13 |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo Ghoul Complete Box Set | Tokyo Ghoul, volumes 1–14 | 9781974703180 |
| Tokyo Ghoul: re Complete Box Set | Tokyo Ghoul: re, volumes 1–16 | 9781974718474 |
VIZ’s editorial introduction to the sequel box calls :re a direct continuation. Its Volume 1 listing shows the numbering restarting under that title. This is why an order for “Tokyo Ghoul 1” needs clarification: the subtitle determines which beginning the buyer receives.
Choose the next book by full title
For continuous manga reading, begin with original Volume 1, finish that fourteen-volume sequence, and then begin :re Volume 1. Keep the two runs on separate inventory lines. Combining them as a thirty-volume purchase total is useful arithmetic, but labeling the sequel books 15–30 would make your list harder to match against actual listings.
If trying the manga, choose the opening original volume before committing to a complete box. If buying a gift, ask for the recipient’s full title and missing numbers. Someone who owns the original run may want the sequel; someone halfway through the original may simply want its next volume.
Count repeated books before buying a box
Suppose you own original volumes 1–5. The original box repeats five books and supplies nine new ones, 6–14. Buying the sequel box instead would add a different run while leaving those nine original books missing. A larger final spine number cannot resolve that gap.
Now suppose you own all fourteen originals and :re volumes 1–3. The sequel box repeats three sequel books and adds thirteen, :re 4–16. Compare the offered box price with buying those missing books separately, allowing for any preference for the box itself. These are hypothetical shelves, not claims about current discounts.
Side books that are not volumes
VIZ also publishes three Tokyo Ghoul novels written by Shin Towada from Ishida's original story. Tokyo Ghoul: Days collects six new stories; its blurb opens at the café Anteiku. Void covers the aftermath six months after the 11th Ward occupation, and Past covers the time before the series opens, while Kaneki was still human. They are prose books, outside both numbered runs. Tokyo Ghoul [Jack], which VIZ describes as a prequel side story about the first case shared by Taishi Fura and Kisho Arima, is listed on VIZ's site as a 352-page edition with an eISBN and digital storefronts. Count all four as extras, not as missing volumes.
Check the actual package
Match the box ISBN and inspect the seller’s contents description. For a used lot, request a photograph showing every spine and confirm whether any advertised extras are included. Keep read status separate from ownership: borrowing a volume does not fill a purchasing gap.
The Tokyo Ghoul watch-order guide addresses the animated viewing route. An anime season number does not identify a missing paperback. For this purchase, the original or :re title, volume number and package contents are the useful coordinates.
