What does クール Cour mean?

A cour (クール) is a broadcasting-period unit of approximately three months. It helps describe when a series runs; it does not promise exactly twelve or thirteen episodes, a complete story arc, or a season with a particular title.

The word and the unit

Shogakukan's Digital Daijisen identifies the broadcasting term as a borrowing from French cours and defines the unit as thirteen weeks, with four cours in a year. The Japanese form is written in katakana, not a compound of kanji meanings.

The same spelling クール can represent other words: the dictionary gives a separate entry from English cool. In an anime scheduling announcement, the broadcasting sense is the relevant one. A character described as cool and a program announced for two cours are not being discussed with the same meaning.

Thirteen weeks is not thirteen guaranteed episodes

A calendar unit and an episode total answer different questions. A cour describes the period; the production's episode list states how much material was released within it. Multiplying the announced number of cours by thirteen is therefore an estimate of weekly slots, not a substitute for a confirmed episode count.

For a concrete comparison, SPY×FAMILY was announced for two separated cours, while Toho's first-season final-volume listing identifies a run of 25 episodes and contains MISSION:21 through MISSION:25. Two cours did not mean an automatic total of 26. The catalog supplies the number that the scheduling term alone leaves open.

What split cour means in practice

The official December 2021 SPY×FAMILY announcement specified a split two-cour broadcast beginning in April 2022. A later official announcement placed the second cour's start on October 1, 2022. The separated blocks were part of the announced arrangement.

That makes second cour a useful label for the return within this run. It does not make every show returning after a break another instance of the same arrangement. The production's own announcement establishes whether it describes the return as another cour, a new season or something else.

Season and part are different kinds of labels

SPY×FAMILY's official introduction calls its April 2022 run Season 1 and its October 2023 run Season 2. Its second cour in October 2022 was therefore not the same release as Season 2. Treating the expressions as interchangeable would point to the wrong installment.

Part can be another subdivision within a named season. An official Attack on Titan announcement calls the ten-episode release starting at episode 50 Season 3 Part.2. That title establishes where the release belongs; the word part by itself does not define a universal number of weeks or episodes.

What scheduling vocabulary cannot explain

These distinctions make release information clearer, but they do not settle judgments about pacing. Knowing that a series occupies one cour does not establish why a scene was cut or whether an ending was well handled. A gap between blocks likewise does not reveal a budget, a staffing problem or a decision to wait for more manga.

Those are production questions requiring their own evidence. Cour supplies one piece of context: the broadcasting unit. Episode counts, official installment names and the story's actual stopping point remain separate information, and a precise explanation keeps them separate.
