Witch Hat Atelier is ongoing, and Kodansha now sells its opening in three ways: single paperbacks, a six-volume box set and the oversized Grimoire Edition hardcovers. All three cover the same story, so the real question is format. The paperbacks are the only line that currently goes past Vol. 9, so every route eventually leads back to them.

Three ways into the same story

From Kodansha’s product pages and Penguin Random House listings, checked October 14, 2026. Prices are publisher list.

The paperbacks

Vol. 1 (ISBN 9781632367709) and Vol. 14 both list at $12.99 in print. Penguin Random House dates Vol. 15 to December 8, 2026 (192 pages) and Vol. 16 to June 15, 2027 (176 pages). Kodansha’s series page marks the series as ongoing, so there is no complete set to buy yet.

Box Set 1: the first six, packaged

Kodansha’s box set page says it “contains the first six volumes of the series, plus an exclusive set of art cards.” At $79.99 it costs $2.05 more than six paperbacks at $12.99 each ($77.94). You are paying for the box and the cards, not saving money. After the box, the next purchase is paperback Vol. 7.

Grimoire Edition: the large hardcovers

Kodansha describes the Grimoire Edition as a “deluxe, keepsake-quality hardcover edition” that includes three volumes per book, “printed on premium paper with intricate gold foil covers and exclusive bonus” content. Each book’s page states its range: Book 1 “Includes Witch Hat Atelier Vols. 1-3,” Book 2 Vols. 4–6 and Book 3 Vols. 7–9. At $49.99 against $38.97 for three paperbacks, each Grimoire book carries an $11.02 premium for the format. Book 3 is not out until November 3, 2026, and no fourth Grimoire book appears on the series page, so a Grimoire reader continues with paperback Vol. 10.

Kitchen is a different series

Witch Hat Atelier Kitchen is a “culinary spinoff that lets readers try their hand at recreating a variety of sumptuous recipes,” with its own numbering. Kitchen Vol. 1 is not main-series Vol. 1. Keep it on a separate list.

Which to buy

  • Trying it out: paperback Vol. 1.
  • Committed, on a budget: paperbacks in order; the box costs slightly more for the same six books.
  • Want a display edition: Grimoire Books 1–3, then paperbacks from Vol. 10.
  • Own the box set: do not buy Grimoire Books 1 and 2 expecting new story; they repeat Vols. 1–6.
