Yami and Gojo each make room for somebody an institution is prepared to exclude. Yet their early interventions do not amount to unrestricted freedom. Yami’s invitation comes with a declaration that refusal is unavailable. Gojo changes the timing of a death sentence while keeping death inside the offered alternatives. Their protection matters; so does the authority it retains.

Yami opens a door on his own terms

In VIZ’s English Black Clover chapter three, Yami tells Asta that magical powers are what matter for a Magic Knight and confronts him over his ambition to become Wizard King. He then tells Asta to join the Black Bulls, adding that Asta does not have the right to refuse.

One reading is that Yami intervenes against exclusion without pretending the prevailing judgment is mild. His invitation gives Asta an actual place after a confrontation about why others will not take him. The welcome has practical force because the captain can supply the opportunity.

The same force gives the welcome a moral problem. An offer is normally valuable partly because a recipient can decline it. Yami’s stated refusal condition makes acceptance more ambiguous. The scene’s comic intimidation may be readable as rough encouragement, but the words still make the powerful person’s preferences central to what happens next.

That tension should not be resolved by declaring the opportunity either worthless or fully liberating. Receiving a place can change someone’s possibilities. It does not automatically establish control over the conditions of belonging.

Gojo changes the sentence, not its entire logic

In VIZ’s English Jujutsu Kaisen chapter two, Megumi says he does not want Yuji to die despite the regulations. Gojo subsequently tells Yuji that his execution has been suspended. On printed page 76, he explains that the higher-ups accepted postponement until Yuji consumes the rest of Sukuna, presenting immediate death or death after that task.

Gojo creates time, which is a real difference under a lethal decision. The chapter also makes the remaining restriction explicit. Yuji is not offered a future in which execution has simply been withdrawn. The available choice sits inside a bargain that continues to treat his body as a means to an institutional end.

One reading finds the protection stronger because the terms are disclosed. Yuji can know what is being proposed rather than mistake delay for acquittal. A different reading finds that honesty insufficient: describing a narrow choice accurately does not make the choice broad.

The counter-reading: partial rescue still counts

The strongest objection to criticism of either mentor is practical. A person facing exclusion or death may benefit enormously from the one person willing and able to intervene. Demanding complete institutional reform as a precondition for credit would make concrete help disappear behind an impossible standard.

That objection is right about the value of the intervention. It is wrong if it then requires the recipient’s gratitude to silence every question about its terms. Partial protection can deserve appreciation and scrutiny at once. The person helped does not lose a claim to freedom because the alternative was worse.

The comparison therefore turns on what a benefactor can demand afterward. Yami’s forceful invitation and Gojo’s suspended sentence both widen an immediate possibility while leaving another person’s authority in place. Neither moment, considered alone, proves that the newcomer has acquired a secure right to choose.

Giving an outsider a chance is a beginning, not a complete account of good mentorship. The demanding next question is whether the relationship can survive a refusal, a challenge or a purpose the mentor did not supply. These opening chapters make that question necessary precisely because the opportunities they create are substantial.
