Yona of the Dawn Watch Order: TV Series, Then the Three OVAs
Watch the 24-episode TV series, then the three OVAs: “On That Back” and the two-part Zeno story bundled with Japanese manga volumes. A sequel is announced, undated.
Spoilers throughout. This page assumes you have finished the series.
Yona of the Dawn has one television series and three OVAs, all from Studio Pierrot under director Kazuhiro Yoneda. The order is short: watch the 24-episode TV series, then the three OVAs in release order. A sequel anime has been announced but has no date.
The TV series
Anime News Network’s encyclopedia entry lists 24 episodes of about 24 minutes, first broadcast in Japan on October 7, 2014. Its episode list runs to episode 24 on March 24, 2015. ANN’s 2016 report notes that Crunchyroll and Funimation both streamed it as it aired, and ANN’s later coverage says Funimation released it on home video. There is one season and nothing to reorder.
The series stops partway through the manga’s story. Anime News Network’s review of episode 24, the final episode, describes Zeno (spelled Jeno there) joining the group as the Yellow Dragon, so that Yona “has assembled all four dragons,” and calls it an ending that implies “the story goes on without us.” This guide does not name the manga volume where the anime stops, because none of the official or ANN sources we checked states it.
The three OVAs
The OVAs are original anime DVDs, which shipped bundled with Japanese manga volumes rather than airing on television. ANN’s OVA entry lists three episodes, starting September 18, 2015. Its episode list gives the titles:
- “On That Back”, the September 2015 release. ANN’s 2016 report says the manga’s 19th Japanese volume “bundled an original anime DVD when it shipped in September.”
- “The Yellow Dragon Zeno’s Past, Part 1: The Starting Dragon”, which ANN reported would ship with a limited edition of volume 21 on August 19, 2016.
- “The Yellow Dragon Zeno’s Past, Part 2: The Red Star Rises”, announced for a limited edition of volume 22 on December 20, 2016.
Episodes 2 and 3 are a two-part adaptation that ANN says will “completely cover the Zeno Arc, which tells the backstory of the character Zeno,” from the manga’s 18th volume, with Kazuhiro Yoneda returning to direct at Studio Pierrot. ANN’s OVA entry summarizes the set as the backstory of how the four dragons and the kingdom of Kouka came to exist, told through Zeno’s flashbacks. Watch them after the TV series: Zeno joins the group only in the final broadcast episode, and these episodes are his backstory. ANN warns that its cast list for the arc spoils the manga’s 18th volume, so treat the Zeno OVAs as spoiler territory if you plan to read that far first.
We have not found an official source that states which manga chapters the first OVA, “On That Back,” adapts, so this guide does not say. It is a standalone episode, and watching it first among the three OVAs follows release order.
The sequel anime
On December 18, 2025, ANN reported that Hana to Yume had announced a sequel anime “in the works,” in the same issue that published the manga’s final chapter. ANN’s April 2026 update still describes it only as in the works. No studio, staff or premiere date was given in either report.
The order, in one place
1. Yona of the Dawn (TV), episodes 1–24. 2. OVA 1, “On That Back.” 3. OVA 2 and 3, the Zeno two-parter. 4. The manga, to continue the story; our manga buying guide covers which English edition to buy, and the Yona of the Dawn catalog lists every volume. For the character the OVAs center on, see our Zeno analysis.
