Alphonse and Rei: Who Gets to Define a Person?
Alphonse and Rei’s selected exchanges resist reducing a person to appearance or purpose. Their distinct relationships make different kinds of recognition possible.

Alphonse and Rei pose different versions of the question of who may define a person. A body can shape how others interpret somebody. An assigned purpose can shape which actions seem available to them. Neither description should acquire the authority to settle the person’s interests before they speak or choose.
Alphonse has a past that a visible body cannot summarize
Wikiquote’s English manga transcription, under Fullmetal Heart, records Edward and Alphonse recalling childhood arguments and Edward challenging the idea that the memories are fake. The shared recollection includes disagreement, rather than merely praise for Alphonse.
One reading is that a relationship grants recognition through specificity. Alphonse can be someone with preferences, victories in petty quarrels and an account of what happened between them. His identity is not exhausted by what another person can infer from looking at him.
This does not prove that recollection is an infallible foundation for identity. Memory can be disputed. The exchange matters because it gives Alphonse a history in which he has acted, wanted and disagreed. Recognizing that history is a different act from deciding whether his present form looks sufficiently human.
Rei changes who can direct a purpose
Mike Crandol’s ANN synopsis of The End of Evangelion describes Gendo summoning Rei to implement his final plan, and Rei instead leaving humanity’s future to Shinji. Her action changes the direction of a purpose somebody else expected her to carry out.
Read this way, recognition requires more than learning facts about a figure. Rei can be known in detail and still be treated primarily as the means to an end. A change in who may direct that end tests whether the person assigned to serve it has any meaningful authority of her own.
That does not make refusal a complete moral answer. The action described in Crandol’s synopsis transfers a consequential choice to another person. Refusing Gendo and granting authority to Shinji are different decisions. The first challenges instrumental treatment; the second still needs an account of why that allocation is justified.
The counter-reading: relationships can define too much
A serious objection says that emphasizing relational recognition for Alphonse can leave his identity dependent on Edward’s testimony. If a person must be remembered correctly by somebody else to count, recognition has become another gatekeeper. A brother’s care cannot be the sole permission to exist as a person.
That objection helps distinguish recognition from creation. A relationship can acknowledge interests and history without being their owner. Edward’s recollection matters as part of the account, not as an exclusive license granting Alphonse individuality.
The same caution applies to Rei. Directing a choice toward Shinji can establish a different relationship without making every aspect of her life self-directed. The comparison does not require declaring that either selected exchange solves identity or freedom for all time.
What connects the passages is resistance to an exhaustive description. A current body is not a whole biography. A purpose assigned by someone else is not a whole will. Alphonse’s disputed memories and Rei’s consequential redirection make those limits visible in different ways.
Both readings remain demanding because a person can be recognized without being idealized. Alphonse’s recollections can be questioned; Rei’s decision can be judged. Granting individuality does not mean exempting a figure from criticism. It means that the criticism addresses someone whose interests and choices deserve consideration, rather than an object whose role has already been settled.
