Android 16’s most revealing change concerns whom his power is used against and what that use is meant to preserve. A weapon’s assigned target does not exhaust the purposes its bearer can acquire.

The original instruction is incomplete

The official Android 16 manga showcase identifies killing Goku as his directive. It then recounts his attempts to prevent Cell absorbing Androids 17 and 18, and his decision to enter the Cell Games to free them.

My reading centers on the movement from a named enemy to endangered companions. The new action is intelligible through a relationship he wants to preserve. Strength gains a protective object beyond the destructive purpose built into his origin.

A protective purpose still encounters limits

The same source records Cell absorbing both companions despite 16’s resistance. At the Cell Games, 16 tries to destroy himself with Cell, only to discover that his explosive device was removed during repairs. Cell then destroys most of his body.

These failures keep agency distinct from control. Choosing a different purpose does not make the body capable of every action the purpose requires. The removed device is especially severe: a plan can depend on an understanding of one’s own capacity that has ceased to be accurate.

The protective intent remains relevant, but cannot repair that missing means. It explains why 16 attempts the act without converting the attempt into an achievement. His willingness to bear a cost and his ability to obtain the desired result separate at the crucial moment.

Companionship changes what counts as success

The effort to free the others gives his fight a standard beyond merely defeating an opponent. A victory would matter through the people it could recover. That makes the relationship part of the action’s purpose, rather than decoration added to a display of strength.

It also prevents a simple account in which gentleness means refusing all force. The sourced actions include determined violence, but violence directed toward protecting companions. Whether an act succeeds and whether its cost is justified still require judgment; the protective object does not answer everything.

What the change establishes is narrower and concrete: the original directive cannot fully explain the later choices. Android 16 acts within a set of capacities created for one purpose while attempting to use them for another. His companions become a reason to fight that the instruction to kill Goku could never supply.
