Android 18's ordinary life does not require her to adopt everyone else's priorities. The tournament shows independence as a mixture of restraint, concern and bargaining, rather than proof that she has become uniformly gentle.

A different reason to compete

The official manga Majin Buu-arc showcase places Android 18 with Krillin and their daughter before the tournament. She enters for money, moderates her strength for its punching test, and stays behind when others leave, while urging Krillin to escape if the danger becomes too great.

Those choices keep domestic connection from becoming an automatic surrender of preference. Concern for Krillin is compatible with declining his course of action. Their relationship does not have to make every decision a joint one before the concern can count as real.

Her moderation during the test also complicates the idea that power naturally demands display. The task is to qualify under the tournament's conditions, so the useful action involves limiting what she can do. Capability becomes something she manages in pursuit of an aim rather than a fact that must be proved at every opportunity.

Victory is something she can sell

The same account describes her agreement to let Mr. Satan win for payment. She performs the promised defeat and threatens him over collection afterward.

The film Bio-Broly, in the English transcription recorded on Wikiquote, gives the same priority a second occasion. While Jaguar's cousin Men-Men threatens to make Mr. Satan's secret public, Android 18 tells them she does not care what happened at summer camp and will not leave until she has been paid. The film sits outside the manga account cited above, and the transcription does not identify its English track. It still repeats the separation this reading depends on: the reputational quarrel belongs to the men, and the payment is hers.

Our reading is that the bargain reveals a freedom unavailable to a competitor whose identity requires the public title. Android 18 can separate being stronger from being recorded as the winner. The result she wants is material; the reputation is negotiable. That is a sharp departure from treating every contest as a referendum on personal worth.

It would be wrong, however, to turn this into a clean example of sensible professionalism. The threat belongs in the analysis too. Her ability to dictate terms is backed by an inequality of force. A bargain can reveal clear priorities while still making the weaker party's freedom questionable.

Agency is not a certificate of virtue

The attraction of this reading is that it allows her several motives at once. Wanting money need not mean she cannot care for someone. Caring need not require joining every dangerous undertaking. A family relationship need not dissolve the capacity to be abrasive or coercive.

The limitation is equally useful: making her own choices does not make those choices beyond criticism. Independence describes who sets the aim, not whether the means are fair. Android 18's tournament appearance remains interesting because it preserves both sides. She refuses to become merely an accessory to another person's adventure, and the choices she makes for herself still invite judgment.
