The Apothecary Diaries Watch Order

Watch seasons 1 and 2, then season 3. Crunchyroll reports the subtitled premiere available from 2 October 2026; the English dub date remains TBA.

Last updated October 2, 2026

Watch season 1, then season 2, then season 3. The official episode lists number the first two seasons continuously: season 1 is episodes 1–24 and season 2 is episodes 25–48. There is no filler or side series to slot in between them.

Japan’s announced season 3 premiere was Friday, 2 October 2026, at 11 p.m. Japan time, in Nippon TV’s Friday Anime Night slot, according to the official schedule. That corresponds to 10 a.m. Eastern. The English-subtitled streaming release has a separate hour: Crunchyroll reports the first episode available on 2 October at 8 a.m. Pacific, or 11 a.m. Eastern.

Season 3 release date and where to watch

The official broadcast page gives the details: every Friday from 11 p.m. on Nippon TV's network, carried by 30 stations nationwide, with the second cour airing from April 2027. Both official pages note that the broadcast time may change. Season 3 is split into two parts, so a pause after the autumn episodes does not mean the season has ended.

Crunchyroll’s 2 October premiere guide reports the first episode available to stream, with English subtitles scheduled for 8 a.m. Pacific / 11 a.m. Eastern on 2 October. It lists North, Central and South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, CIS and the Indian Subcontinent. The fall lineup still lists the English dub as TBA when checked on 2 October; the subtitled premiere does not establish a dub date. Availability here is attributed to the service’s announcement, rather than an independently played episode. Seasons 1 and 2 remain the place to catch up.

The film is not part of the watch order

A separate film, 劇場版 薬屋のひとりごと 亡妃の秘宝, opens in Japanese cinemas on 11 December 2026. The official season 3 introduction describes it as an all-new story conceived by the original author, Natsu Hyuuga, set in a water city south of the capital. It is not an adaptation of the novels the series follows, and nothing in the announcements suggests it is required viewing for season 3. We have not found an announced English release date or official English title.

Where the anime ends in the light novels

The anime adapts Natsu Hyuuga's light novels, not either manga; Crunchyroll's announcement credits Hyuuga with "the original light novels." Neither the studio nor the publishers have published an episode-to-volume map, so the placement below is our reading of the official synopses and the publishers' own descriptions, not an official statement. Those descriptions discuss how season 2 ends, so treat the links in this section as spoilers.

The official season 2 story opens with Consort Gyokuyo's pregnancy. That is the premise of Volume 3 in J-Novel Club's volume descriptions. The official season 3 story begins once the upheaval that closes season 2 has settled, and the season 3 announcement says it opens on locusts served at breakfast. Square Enix's description of Volume 5 is set in the same aftermath and names an impending plague of insects. So the place to continue after season 2 is Volume 5.

Reading Volume 5 means reading ahead of the anime. The official portal lists 16 Japanese volumes of the novels, and J-Novel Club lists 16 English volumes digitally, so there is a long way to go past the point where season 3 starts.

Which Apothecary Diaries manga to read

There are two separate manga adaptations of the same novels, by different artists for different publishers. The official Books page lists both.

  • Nekokurage's version (composition by Itsuki Nanao), serialized in Square Enix's Monthly Big Gangan. Square Enix Manga & Books publishes it in English as The Apothecary Diaries (Manga). Vol. 1 came out on 8 December 2020; Vol. 15 on 17 March 2026; Vol. 16 is listed for 3 November 2026.
  • Minoji Kurata's version, serialized in Shogakukan's Monthly Sunday GX with the subtitle 猫猫の後宮謎解き手帳. VIZ Media publishes it in English as The Apothecary Diaries: Maomao's Notes on the Inner Palace, starting with Vol. 1 on 20 October 2026.

Neither English manga reaches the point where season 3 begins. Going by its description, Square Enix's Vol. 16 is still inside the storyline that closes season 2. The novels are the only English edition that continues past the anime.

To continue the story after season 2, buy novel Vol. 5. Square Enix publishes the print novels; J-Novel Club sells them digitally.

To read the manga now, start with Square Enix's Vol. 1. Fifteen volumes are already out, and its publisher page offers a free preview of the opening chapter. VIZ's edition is a new start from a different artist: Vol. 1 is a much thicker book at a higher list price (396 pages against 178), so compare page counts rather than volume numbers. Buying both means buying the same opening story twice. We have not read VIZ's edition, which is not yet published, so we make no claim about which art or translation is better.

Our Apothecary Diaries quote analysis is drawn from Square Enix's English manga. It includes Maomao's reasons for hiding that she can read and how Jinshi finds her without accusing her. Prices and dates were checked on 24 September 2026. They come from publisher listings, not live offers. See the anime calendar for the premiere.

The manga Volume 2 opening analysis follows the obstruction between Maomao’s imperial order and access to Lihua. It reads only the identified manga preview; the treatment outcome, light-novel numbering and an exact anime handoff remain outside that evidence.

The standard Volume 4 opening analysis examines Maomao’s distinction between physical evidence and a verdict in the rear palace. The spoiler note identifies the pages read and leaves the later outcome outside its argument.
