Maomao’s first manga chapter treats concealing knowledge as a practical defense, then shows why useful expertise can still make her visible.

Maomao’s supposed ignorance is a tactic, not a lack of knowledge. On printed page 38 of Square Enix’s English manga Volume 1, Jinshi notes that she has been taken for illiterate. She verbally attributes the situation to her humble background while her thoughts make clear that she has been concealing what she knows. The reader gets the division between the safe public explanation and the private one.

Knowing something does not confer protection

One reading is that Maomao understands knowledge as exposure. Showing a useful skill can change what powerful people expect from her without giving her corresponding control over those expectations. Concealing literacy is therefore a calculation about the conditions under which competence becomes visible. It is not evidence that education is unimportant to her.

The chapter gives that calculation a material basis. On page 12, her thoughts reject the attraction of higher wages because the increase would enrich her abductors. Improvement in her position would not simply become an improvement she could keep. This makes the familiar story of talent earning promotion less straightforward: becoming more useful can reward someone other than the person doing the work.

The notes expose the limit of withdrawal

Page 38 also has Maomao wonder how Jinshi discovered the notes. Whatever protection concealment offered, it has not made her contribution invisible to him. That is the tension worth following. Knowledge can help; acting on it can leave a trail. A strategy that keeps her safe only while she never intervenes would have a serious moral limit.

The strongest objection is that withholding information can protect the person who knows at another person’s expense. Maomao’s practical fear cannot automatically justify every silence. Yet demanding that she display every skill would make her responsible for solving other people’s problems while ignoring the conditions that make visibility costly for her. Neither blanket admiration for caution nor blanket condemnation of it fits the scene.

The narration gives access to Maomao’s calculation while Jinshi hears a different explanation. That split is the mechanism: the reader can understand her intelligence without treating the court’s recognition of it as an uncomplicated reward. Her skill and her freedom to choose its use are separate questions.

This reading concerns the Nekokurage manga’s opening chapter, not the novels or an unidentified anime script. The licensed Maomao lines provide the locations. Expertise gives her something to offer. It does not, on these pages, give her a safe right to decline.
