Berserk Watch Order: 1997, the Films, or 2016?
Start with the 1997 series or the Golden Age Arc Memorial Edition. How the films overlap, where the 2016–2017 seasons fit, and which manga volume to begin with.
Start with Berserk (1997), or choose the Golden Age Arc Memorial Edition for a shorter introduction. These are alternative ways into the story of Guts and the Band of the Hawk. You do not need to watch that story twice before continuing. The 2016 series and its 2017 second season move into later material; the Memorial Edition's 2022 release date does not make it their sequel.

The repeated title is the main trap. A listing for Berserk with 25 episodes identifies the older television adaptation; the later show's two seasons total 24. Check the year and episode count together instead of assuming every listing belongs to one long series. The licensed 1997 disc listing identifies OLM as its studio and confirms its 25 episodes.
Choose one introduction
For a first watch, our recommendation is the 1997 series in episode order. Its longer television run gives you more time with this part of the story. That is a preference for the longer introduction, not a claim that this adaptation includes every manga scene or gives you the complete Berserk story.
If you prefer a shorter commitment, begin with the Memorial Edition instead. You can then decide whether the older series interests you as another interpretation. Watching both makes sense when you want to compare adaptations; it should not become homework imposed before you are allowed to continue.
Films or Memorial Edition?
Studio 4°C made the Golden Age Arc as three theatrical films released in 2012–2013. Their numbered order is straightforward: I, II, then III. They return to the Golden Age rather than picking up after the 1997 series.
The studio's Memorial Edition description confirms that the 2022 television version adapts those films into 13 episodes, adds scenes including the Bonfire of Dreams, revises existing cuts and includes new music. It is not a remaster of the 1997 animation. For someone choosing between the films and their television revision, we recommend the Memorial Edition because it includes additional material.
Choose the trilogy if you specifically want the theatrical presentation. Choose the Memorial Edition if you want the revised television presentation. Neither choice requires watching the other first, and neither becomes a later chapter simply because it was released later.
Then the 2016 and 2017 seasons
Once you have chosen a Golden Age introduction, the later television adaptation is the next anime option. VIZ's overview of Berserk adaptations distinguishes the earlier retellings from the series that began covering further material in 2016. This is a practical viewing sequence, rather than a promise that adaptations made by different teams join without omissions or changes.
Watch the 2016 first season, then the 2017 second season. The official release page confirms 24 episodes in the combined set and identifies episodes 13–24 as the second season. If a service or disc catalog calls the 2017 material “season two,” it means the second season of this later show, not a newly discovered second season of the 1997 production.
Starting the manga after the anime
Our recommendation is to begin Kentaro Miura's manga at volume one. That lets you follow its own introduction and sequence without needing a chapter-by-chapter reconciliation of the adaptations. Reading it does not require completing every anime version first.
Check the edition before comparing volume numbers. Dark Horse's Berserk Deluxe Volume 1 collects standard volumes 1–3 in one larger hardcover. “Volume 1” therefore describes different amounts of material in the two formats. The Deluxe format is an edition choice, not an extra story or a prerequisite for reading Berserk.
