Berserk Manga Buying Guide: Paperbacks or Deluxe Hardcovers

Dark Horse's Berserk paperbacks against the Deluxe hardcovers: what each Deluxe book collects, listed prices, the post-Miura volumes and where each line stops.

Last updated October 7, 2026

Dark Horse sells Berserk in English in two current print lines: numbered paperbacks and Deluxe Edition hardcovers. They are not two different stories. Each Deluxe book through Deluxe 13 collects three consecutive paperbacks; Deluxe 14 collects two paperbacks and adds the Berserk Official Guidebook. The choice is about format, price and where each line currently stops, so settle those before buying a first book.

The two formats side by side

The paperbacks list at $14.99 each. Penguin Random House’s listings give the paperback size as 5-1/6 × 7-1/4 inches for Volume 1 and 5-1/8 × 7-1/4 for Volume 42; our catalog records Dark Horse listing the earliest volumes at 5 × 7 inches, so the exact paperback trim depends on the source and the volume. The Deluxe 1 listing describes a 7″ × 10″ leatherette hardcover with red foiling and a ribbon bookmark. Those are the publisher’s stated features; a larger page is more page area, not evidence of thicker paper or sturdier binding.

The Deluxe price depends on whose listing you read. Penguin Random House listed all 14 Deluxe hardcovers at $54.99 when checked on October 7, 2026, but our catalog leaves the Deluxe price blank because a September 2026 check found Dark Horse’s own listing and Penguin Random House’s disagreeing. At Penguin Random House’s figure, one Deluxe book costs $10.02 more than the $44.97 its three paperbacks list for, and Deluxe 1–14 come to $769.86 against $614.59 for paperbacks 1–41, though Deluxe 14 also carries the Guidebook. Treat those differences as one listing’s arithmetic, not a fixed premium; retail offers and stock differ from any list price.

The volume mapping comes from our catalog and matches Penguin Random House’s description of every Deluxe book, checked October 7, 2026: for example Deluxe 1 (“volumes 1–3”), Deluxe 2 (“volumes 4-6”), Deluxe 13 (“Volume 37, 38, and 39”) and Deluxe 14 (“Volumes 40, 41, and Berserk Official Guidebook”). Deluxe 13’s page count is left blank because Dark Horse and Penguin Random House give different figures. The years are the publication years; exact dates differ by days or weeks between the two sources, so they are not printed here.

The post-Miura volumes

Kentaro Miura died in May 2021. The Volume 41 listing calls it the one final volume he left behind, published in English in November 2022 with a two-sided color poster insert. Volume 42, published March 18, 2025, is the first new volume since his death, made by Studio Gaga, Miura’s longtime assistants, under the supervision of Kouji Mori; it runs 192 pages and contains a double-sided foldout. Volume 43 is listed for November 24, 2026 (checked October 7, 2026) at 220 pages, with a foldout, an afterword by Mori and a bonus comic strip about Miura.

Where each line stands today

The paperback line has 42 volumes out, and Volume 43 is a preorder (checked October 7, 2026). The Deluxe line stops at Deluxe 14, which ends with Volume 41’s material: Volumes 42 and 43 are in no Deluxe book, and Penguin Random House listed no Deluxe 15 when checked. A Deluxe reader who wants the Studio Gaga chapters has to switch to the paperbacks at Volume 42, and a reader planning a uniform shelf should expect that gap to stay open until another Deluxe book is announced.

The two lines may not print identical English. The Deluxe 13 description advertises updated translations along with three fold-out color posters, so a reader moving between formats mid-run may see different wording in the same scene. The edition-switching guide covers what to check before changing format partway through.

Which line suits which buyer

  • Trying the series: paperback Volume 1 is one $14.99 book; Deluxe 1 holds the same opening plus the next two paperbacks, at $54.99 on Penguin Random House’s listing.
  • Reading the whole Miura run in the larger format: Deluxe 1–14, then paperbacks 42 onward.
  • Staying in one format through the newest volume: only the paperback line currently reaches Volume 42.
  • Filling a gap: match the ISBN on the Berserk manga catalog or the Deluxe Edition inventory; a Deluxe number is not a paperback number.

Every listing checked here carries a mature-readers notice. For the anime versions, the Berserk watch order sorts out which adaptation is which; this guide makes no claim about where any of them stops in the manga.
