Did Erwin Really Say “Dedicate Your Hearts!”?

Unverified. CBR says the show's commanders often use the phrase and translates an opening's title as "dedicate your hearts"; no trusted source quotes Erwin saying the English line.

Unverified. "Dedicate your hearts!" is shared as Erwin Smith's rallying cry in Attack on Titan. We found no trusted source that quotes him saying those English words. What we did find ties the phrase to the show's commanders in general, to a song title and to the Survey Corps salute, which is not the same as a sourced line of Erwin's dialogue.

What the sources say

CBR's feature on the openings says that the season 2 opening, "Shinzou Wo Sasageyo", translates to "dedicate your hearts" and calls it "the most important takeaway from this opening." ComicBook reports that Linked Horizon announced the song's English title as "Dedicate All Your Hearts!" A second CBR feature says the third opening's lyrics tell viewers to "sacrifice your heart," "a phrase often said by commanders in the show to tell their soldiers to devote themselves to the fight." ComicBook, writing about the fist-over-heart salute, says "Erwin and Levi made the gesture famous" and that the first season "taught fans the importance of dedicating their hearts." None of them puts the English sentence in Erwin's mouth with a chapter or an episode.

Wikiquote's Attack on Titan page carries Erwin's lines from the Female Titan and Return to Shiganshina arcs, including his long speech about the fallen and the meaning of their lives. The phrase is not among them. Erwin's verified lines are on his page here.

Why it is not marked fake

Failing to find a line does not show it was never said, and here there is positive evidence that something like it is: CBR says commanders in the show often use the phrase. Erwin is the commander most tied to the salute, so a scene in which he says it is plausible. Plausible is not sourced. The English wording "Dedicate your hearts!" comes from the song title, and only a licensed text can say whether Erwin speaks those words, or "sacrifice your heart", or something else.

What would settle it

A page of Kodansha's English Attack on Titan, or a named English subtitle or dub track, where Erwin speaks the line, with the chapter or episode. The series is on the Attack on Titan hub and in the manga buying guide; the verdict is logged in the fact-check database, and the verification method explains why an unfound line is unverified rather than fake.
