Did Killua Really Say “Gon, You Are Light”?
Yes. The lines are Killua's, from episode 85 of the 2011 anime, but the English varies. Crunchyroll's official subtitles leave out Gon's name and say "at your side" where the popular version says "by your side."
Spoilers throughout. This page assumes you have finished the series.
Yes, the lines are Killua's, but there is more than one English version of them. They come from episode 85 of the 2011 Hunter × Hunter anime, "Light x And x Darkness," which Anime News Network's episode list dates to June 23, 2013 in Japan. The English wording depends on where you read it. The version that circulates opens with Gon's name and ends "by your side". The official English subtitles we could read have no name at the start and end "at your side". Only the subtitles come from a licensed release.
The two wordings
| Source | Wording | What kind of source it is |
|---|---|---|
| Crunchyroll's official clip, "You Are Light," uploaded June 18, 2020 | "You are light." … "Sometimes, you shine so brightly, I must look away." "But even so, is it still okay if I stay at your side?" | The English subtitles on a clip posted to Crunchyroll's own YouTube channel, whose description labels it episode 85. |
| ComicBook, Areeba Khan, September 20, 2025 | "Gon, you are light. Sometimes you shine so brightly, I must look away. But even so, is it still okay if I stay by your side?" | A sentence in the body of a ranked list. It names episode 85 but not a translation. |
Put side by side, the differences are small and specific. ComicBook opens with "Gon," while in the subtitles the first line is only "You are light." ComicBook says "by your side", and the subtitles say "at your side". The subtitles also put a comma after "Sometimes", which ComicBook does not. The two agree on "still" and on every other word. So the popular version, with Gon's name and "by your side", does not match the one licensed wording we could read, and ComicBook does not say where its version comes from.
What the subtitles show about the scene
The clip's description sums it up: "Killua is guilty for drawing Gon away from Kite but finds Gon thankful when he awakens." The subtitles before the monologue bear that out, although like all subtitles they name no speakers. One line asks, "Weren't you the one who stopped me?" Another says, "Had I lost control back there, I would've gotten in Kite's way," and the next adds, "Then, all three of us could have died." Then comes "Kite is alive!" and, a little later, "So we should hurry back..."
The light lines follow, between about 1:41 and 2:02 in the clip. They are not one continuous run of text. "You are light." stands alone. Then comes a separate line, "Yeah, you're right.", and only after that the last two sentences. The subtitles set the three light sentences in italics and the lines around them in upright type. The clip does not say what that styling marks, and this page does not guess. A version that runs the three sentences together as one speech is joining lines that the subtitles keep apart. The clip settles the subtitle text. It does not settle how the original Japanese delivers the line.
What we could not check
We could not read VIZ's English pages for this scene, because VIZ's free previews show only the opening pages of each volume. We did not check the English dub. The dub copies of the scene we found were fan uploads, and this site does not treat those as a source. So the licensed manga wording and the dub wording are both still open, and either could turn out to be the source of "by your side".
What this site prints
Killua's quote page already carries this line in ComicBook's wording, the version with "Gon," and "by your side". Its source note says that Crunchyroll's official subtitles use a different preposition in the final question. This check confirms that note and adds two more differences: the subtitles have no opening name, and they split the speech around another line. Until a licensed manga page or the dub can be read, the honest answer is that the lines are real and that their exact English depends on the source. Other checked lines are on the Hunter × Hunter hub, and Ging's "little detours" is another line from this series that circulates in more than one English version.
How we checked
The verification process puts a licensed release ahead of any article. The licensed text here is the English subtitle track on Crunchyroll's official clip, read on October 7, 2026, alongside ComicBook's article, which prints the line in prose. The episode's title and air date come from Anime News Network and from Nippon TV's official episode page, which lists episode 85 as ヒカリ×ト×カゲ and dates its broadcast to June 23. The verdict is logged in the fact-check database as real, with the translation caveat.
