Killua Zoldyck can name a life he rejects before he can name one he wants. In VIZ’s licensed opening of Hunter x Hunter Volume 8, he envies Gon’s goals and says he has no plan for his own life. Taking over the family business belongs on his list of things he does not want to do. His explanation makes the lack of a goal more specific than indecision: the upbringing he describes kept him at home learning to kill people. Gon, he says, is his first friend. Gon’s answer offers company and separate purposes in the same journey, finding his father while Killua discovers something he wants to do. Killua agrees with a condition: he will travel along until he finds that purpose. Our reading is that the friendship’s promise rests on leaving that future open. Treating his agreement as unconditional devotion would erase the limit he states. The following conversation about mothers adds a different kind of dependence. Hearing about Mito, Killua wishes he had a mother like her; he can recognize care he lacks without yet supplying himself with a replacement. These printed pages, 14–19, present friendship as room for choosing, rather than proof that choice has already become easy.

“Gon, you are light. Sometimes you shine so brightly, I must look away. But even so, is it still okay if I stay by your side?”
Gon's gratitude unsettles Killua because it praises the restraint he is struggling to value in himself. Gon says that losing control would have put him in Kite's way and could have killed all three of them. Staying beside a friend has already required stopping him. That makes Killua's closing question painful: he seeks permission to belong after doing something the friendship needed. The scene also limits that reassurance. Gon insists Kite is alive and wants them to return. Killua receives hope together with a proposed course of action. Calling Gon his light captures relief, but it is a precarious basis for judgment if confidence becomes something he must preserve. Admiration should not make the friend's certainty untouchable. Killua's earlier confrontation with Sadaso complicates any clean separation between loyal friend and trained assassin. He protects Gon through a credible threat of killing. The purpose has changed; the available method carries his upbringing with it. His friendship matters because it gives him something to choose beyond the family, not because every choice made for Gon becomes harmless.

Sadaso's pressure on Gon ends when Killua threatens him into leaving Heavens Arena. Protection succeeds through the credible possibility of killing, rather than a killing itself. That restraint matters, but so does the method: changing whom he protects has not made his training irrelevant. Friendship redirects a dangerous skill without automatically making its use innocent.

“Gon, I should thank you. I'm the one who is glad that I got to know you.”
The goodbye lets Killua answer Gon's thanks with gratitude of his own. Their separation gives the exchange weight: the friendship need not require continuing the same journey. Earlier, his confrontation with Sadaso already showed initiative on Gon's behalf. This farewell changes how they remain friends, rather than inventing Killua's capacity to act for himself.

He is answering Illumi, who has asked why he wants to become a Hunter. The correction is the whole character in one sentence and it is delivered to the person who built him. Killua was raised as an assassin by a family that fed him electricity and poison from infancy and conditioned him to run from any fight he could not certainly win, and none of that is what he renounces here. He does not say he wants to be good. He says he wants a friend and is sick of the work, which is a far smaller and far more credible claim.
