Fairy Tail Filler: The Three Arcs and Where They Sit

Daphne, Key of the Starry Sky and Eclipse Celestial Spirits are Fairy Tail's three filler arcs. Where each sits by episode, which one the guides defend, and what this list leaves out.

Fairy Tail's anime-original material comes mostly in three named arcs: Daphne, Key of the Starry Sky and Eclipse Celestial Spirits. Around them sit a handful of one-off episodes whose status the sources do not settle. Even the total is disputed: CBR counts 61 filler episodes and Game Rant counts 63, out of a run Game Rant puts at 328 episodes. Neither publishes the episode-by-episode list behind its number, so this page gives the arcs it can source and flags the rest.

How this list was checked

Arc boundaries come from the arc markers in Anime News Network's episode lists for the 2009 series and the 2014 series, which note where each named arc starts and ends. That tells you where an arc sits, not whether it is adapted. For that, each arc below also rests on a staff-written article that calls it filler or anime-exclusive. Those articles come from CBR, Game Rant and Screen Rant, which share an owner, Valnet, so they are not fully independent of one another. Numbers are the continuous Japanese broadcast numbers, which the 2014 series carries on from 176.

The three filler arcs

EpisodesArcSources
69 to 75DaphneANN marks the arc from 69, "Call of the Dragon", to 75, "The 24-Hour Endurance Road Race", with Edolas starting at 76. CBR calls it the "anime-exclusive Daphne arc" between the Oración Seis and Edolas arcs.
125 to 150Key of the Starry SkyANN marks it from 125, "Magical Ball!", to 150, "Lucy and Michelle". Screen Rant lists it as a filler arc at episodes 125 to 150.
204 to 218Eclipse Celestial SpiritsANN marks the arc from 204, "Full Effort Hospitality!", to 218, "Believe"; the Grand Magic Games end at 201 by its marker. ANN critic Rebecca Silverman's review of a home-video set from the arc treats it as one of the "anime-only arcs". Game Rant names this and Key of the Starry Sky as the series' "two main filler arcs".

Two episodes sit between the Tenrou Island arc and Key of the Starry Sky: 123, "Fairy Tail, X791", and 124, "The Seven-Year Gap". ANN gives them their own label, X791, and Screen Rant's range begins after them. We have not checked them against the manga, so watch them rather than skip them.

ANN gives no arc label to the episodes either side of Eclipse: 202 and 203 between the Grand Magic Games and Eclipse, and 219 to 226 between Eclipse and the next arc, which begins at 227. Those ten episodes are not on the table above, because we could not establish which of them adapt the manga.

What this list leaves out

The three arcs come to 48 episodes, short of either outlet's total. The rest are one-off episodes. Game Rant's list of the best filler episodes names several, but it is the only staff-written source we found for most of them, and it also counts an episode from the Fairy Tail Zero run as filler. With one outlet and no manga check behind them, those episodes are not listed here.

Which filler is worth watching

The outlets split on the two big arcs, and the split is useful. Game Rant argues that Key of the Starry Sky is "crucial for Lucy's character development" because it focuses on her childhood and her relationship with her father. Screen Rant adds that, although Hiro Mashima did not write the arc, the events of the arc were acknowledged in the manga, which mentions the Zentopia incident.

Eclipse Celestial Spirits gets the opposite treatment. CBR's 2019 ranking of the worst filler arcs calls it "the worst of the worst in Fairy Tail", citing a dance-off among its detours, while Game Rant defends it as a breather between the Grand Magic Games and Tartaros. If you skip one long arc, CBR's ranking points at Eclipse.

Daphne is the short one. CBR's worst-episodes list includes its episode 70, the Natsu and Gray fight, which ends without a true victor.

The practical summary

For the shortest route, skip 69 to 75, 125 to 150 and 204 to 218, and keep 123 and 124. Watch Key of the Starry Sky if you care about Lucy; it is the filler arc the sources defend most. The Fairy Tail watch order covers the three series, Fairy Tail Zero, the films and 100 Years Quest. The same treatment for other long shonen runs is at Naruto, One Piece and Bleach.
