Naruto Filler: What to Keep After Episode 135

Most of the original Naruto's remaining episodes after 135 are anime-original, but 135 is not a clean skip-to-Shippuden boundary. Episodes 141 and 220 contain transition scenes worth preserving.

This guide explains that exception and the difference between optional material and material that can safely be skipped. It is not a complete episode-by-episode classification of Naruto and Shippuden.

After episode 135: keep the transition scenes

The long run of anime-original missions near the end of the first series makes a blanket skip tempting. It also conceals material that belongs to the manga's transition into the next stage of the story. Siliconera's guide identifies episode 141 as containing Sakura's decision to pursue training, and singles out episode 220 for Naruto's departure.

The official episode 220 synopsis confirms that Naruto leaves to train with Jiraiya after the mission concludes. The official Naruto retrospective places that departure in volume 27, chapter 238. Calling all of episodes 136–220 disposable filler would lose that farewell.

Keep Sakura's training decision in 141 and Naruto's departure in 220 before moving to Shippuden. That does not make every scene in either episode manga-adapted. This page does not give skip timestamps because the cited scenes have not been checked against a specified playback edition.

Why it happened

The adaptation was faster than the source. Here the studio marked time from episode 136 in May 2005 to the finale in February 2007. Filler is not a creative failure; it is a scheduling artifact, and knowing that reframes the block as what it is, a holding pattern with occasional good episodes trapped inside it.

Shippuden needs a separate episode guide

Shippuden's anime-original material is scattered through the series. This page has not yet verified an episode-level list for it. A scene's apparent relevance to the war is not a test of whether it adapts the manga: training, conversations and side stories can carry source material too.

A useful skip map needs evidence for each range and notes for episodes that combine manga material with additions. Until those checks are complete, this guide does not offer a complete Shippuden skip sequence.

Is any of it worth watching?

Some, and the fair answer costs nothing to give. The difference between anime-original episodes and canon is not quality, it is consequence: filler is forbidden from changing anything, so the best of it works in the one register that needs no consequences, comedy and quiet character time. Sample freely on a rewatch. On a first watch, the story's momentum is worth more than any of it.

The practical summary

For the original series, do not treat episode 135 as the last adapted material: preserve the transition scenes in 141 and 220. For Shippuden, a complete sourced classification remains to be checked.
