Ghost in the Shell Watch Order
Choose the 1995 film, Stand Alone Complex or Arise, then follow that version. Where Innocence, SAC_2045, Alternative Architecture and the 2026 anime fit.
Start with Ghost in the Shell (1995) if you want a film, or Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex if you want a television series. They offer different versions of Motoko Kusanagi and Section 9. You do not need to finish the films before trying the TV branch.
The main ordering mistake is treating the familiar names as proof that every adaptation belongs to one continuous story. Choose a version first, then follow its sequels. The film branch, Stand Alone Complex and Arise are useful starting categories, but they are not an exhaustive count of everything the franchise has produced.
Choose a branch
| Start here | What follows | Useful distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Ghost in the Shell (1995) | Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence | Follow this pair as the film route |
| Stand Alone Complex | 2nd GIG, then Solid State Society | A television version of Section 9 |
| Arise | Its additional Pyrophoric Cult story, then The New Movie | A different account of the team's beginnings |
Choose by the kind of first commitment you want to make. A film is a useful way to try the world in one sitting; a series gives you more time with Section 9's work and its members. If one format does not engage you, that is a reason to consider the other, not evidence that every adaptation will leave you cold.
The film route: 1995, then Innocence
Watch Ghost in the Shell (1995), then Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (2004). The official introduction to Innocence identifies it as Mamoru Oshii's sequel to the 1995 film. There is no television season to insert between this pair.
Check the year as well as the title when choosing the first film. This franchise reuses its name across adaptations, and a search result headed only Ghost in the Shell does not tell you which work it means. That small check is more useful than trying to resolve the whole franchise's history before watching anything.
The television route: Stand Alone Complex
Start with Stand Alone Complex, continue with 2nd GIG, then watch Solid State Society. The official series guide groups those works together and explicitly distinguishes this Motoko from the one in Oshii's film. You are allowed to learn this version on its own terms.
That is why the first season is a real entry point. Watching the 1995 film first can be an interesting comparison, but it is not a missing prologue to the television story. Carrying expectations from one version into another is fine; forcing every character detail to agree is less useful.
If you want to continue with SAC_2045, watch its first season before its second. Its official introduction identifies the return of the original Stand Alone Complex cast and director Kenji Kamiyama, alongside co-director Shinji Aramaki. We suggest trying it after the earlier SAC works. The change in animation approach is not a reason to insert it among the 1995 film and Innocence.
Arise and Alternative Architecture
Arise tells a version of the period before Section 9's formation. Its first four parts are labeled border:1 through border:4. The television presentation, Alternative Architecture, includes those stories and the additional Pyrophoric Cult material, as the official Arise introduction explains.
Choose the four-part presentation followed by Pyrophoric Cult, or watch Alternative Architecture as its own TV presentation. You do not need to watch both versions of the shared material as consecutive chapters. After that, continue to Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie, which the official Arise series page places in the same group.
The words “before Section 9” describe this version's subject. They do not establish Arise as a compulsory prequel to every other adaptation, or make its ending a verified bridge into the 1995 film. Keep this route together rather than splicing it into the film pair.
What about The Ghost in the Shell from 2026?
Science SARU's The Ghost in the Shell is another television adaptation. Identify it by the studio and year when a listing uses the familiar title. It should not be mistaken for Stand Alone Complex season one or for the 1995 film. The routes above explain those earlier branches; they are not a claim that the franchise stopped adding versions after Arise.
Other series with distinct ordering problems have their own guides: Fate and Monogatari. For Ghost in the Shell, start by choosing the work you want to watch, then stay within its branch.
