Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku is complete in English in 13 VIZ paperbacks, and the Complete Box Set holds those 13 plus an extra book. At list price the box costs less than the singles and adds an 80-page bonus epilogue, so for anyone buying the whole series new, it is the better route. The singles make sense for trying it or for filling gaps.

The box set

VIZ’s box set page says it “Contains all 13 volumes of the acclaimed horror-action series, as well as an exclusive 80-page book featuring the bonus epilogue story ‘Forest of Misfortune.’” At $189.99 it is $4.88 less than the 13 singles at list, and VIZ’s series listing shows no standalone edition of the epilogue. If you already own some volumes, the box repeats them, so weigh the epilogue against the duplicates. Buying a used box, confirm the bonus book is inside.

The paperbacks

Vol. 1 (ISBN 9781974713202) sets the premise: Gabimaru, an assassin from the ninja village of Iwagakure, is sentenced to death and can earn his freedom only by recovering “an elixir that will make the shogun immortal” from a long-hidden island. VIZ’s series listing marks Vol. 13 (ISBN 9781974728510) “Final Volume!” VIZ publishes the series under its VIZ Signature imprint at 5¾ × 8¼ inches and rates it Mature.

Which to buy

  • Trying it: Vol. 1.
  • Buying the whole series new: the Complete Box Set.
  • Own some singles: fill the gaps with singles, unless the epilogue is worth the duplicates to you.

If you came from the anime, our Hell’s Paradise watch order covers the seasons. For the lead, see Gabimaru (spoilers), and for other boxes, the box set guide.
