For readers continuing the original paperbacks, 20th Century Boys Volume 2 keeps the Friend's identity unresolved. The cult's activity gives Kenji reasons to examine his childhood connections more closely, while an inquiry into kidnappings approaches the same organization. Check the edition before replacing a missing copy: VIZ also publishes a Perfect Edition Vol. 2, with a different ISBN and a separate story description. Matching the number on the spine is not enough to match this book in an existing collection.

Yukiji remembers that Otcho devised the group's symbol, and learns that he vanished after working in Thailand. Those facts make him someone to investigate; they do not make him the Friend. The distinction is the useful pressure in this paperback's premise. A shared emblem can connect people without explaining what each person did with it. The detective following the Shikishima kidnapping case supplies another route toward the cult, independent of the childhood circle's suspicions. Perfect Edition Vol. 2 has its own premise involving Kenji approaching the Friend at a concert hall. Treat the editions as separate sequences until their contents, rather than their numbers, have been matched.
