Neo Tokyo in 2014 supplies the changed setting for the standard 20th Century Boys Volume 6. Kanna is now seventeen, and the city has recovered from Bloody New Year's Eve into a busy metropolis. That changed setting is a reason to continue from the earlier books, not a replacement starting point. The past remains necessary to understanding the present. This volume also introduces its prison situation alongside the city story, so the apparent recovery is only part of the advertised picture.

Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.

The city has recovered, but VIZ places a young manga artist in a maximum-security prison in Tokyo Bay. His transfer to solitary confinement brings him near a notorious inmate who might offer a way out. The contrast matters more than the promise of another mysterious figure. Public prosperity and a prisoner's desperation can exist at the same time; the visible rebuilding does not answer what kind of order has replaced the old crisis. Kanna's survival supplies another point of continuity across the gap in time. The new date changes where the investigation happens, while leaving the earlier disaster inside it.
