A Sign of Affection 1 begins with Yuki meeting Itsuomi after a language difficulty on a train. Yuki is a deaf college student who communicates through sign language and her phone; the immediate difficulty is a tourist asking for directions in English. Start with this single for the encounter that introduces the relationship. The opening premise gives both people something unfamiliar to navigate, rather than making communication a problem only Yuki brings to the meeting.

The first encounter separates different kinds of language knowledge. Yuki already has ways to communicate, but the tourist's English is unfamiliar to her. Itsuomi can help in that encounter and speaks three languages, yet Kodansha also specifies that he has never had a deaf friend. Being experienced in one kind of exchange does not make him experienced in every other kind. This is a useful reason to begin with the meeting: it establishes an uneven distribution of knowledge without reducing either person to total competence or total helplessness. Yuki's difficulty with the tourist does not erase the methods she already uses. Itsuomi's intervention does not establish that he already understands how to communicate with her. The publisher's premise supports that distinction without supplying the details of their later conversations.
