Shoya's attempted reconciliation has broken down, leaving this paperback focused on a crisis within the group. The summer project no longer provides a sufficient frame for the relationships around him and Shoko. Continue here after Volume 5, with the earlier efforts to reunite the friends in mind. This is a difficult stage to isolate from the run: the damage concerns bonds the preceding books asked readers to follow, rather than a separate problem arriving from outside.

The rupture changes the terms of the reconciliation story. Kodansha describes Shoya attacking his friends and destroying the relationships he had tried to rebuild; Shoko blames herself and attempts suicide. Her sense of responsibility must not be confused with an objective account of who caused the group's collapse. Reading the crisis as a debt she should repay would accept the very reasoning that makes it dangerous. The important shift is away from Shoya's wish to become a better former bully toward the consequences of everyone assigning blame. A relationship cannot be repaired by making its most vulnerable participant responsible for keeping it intact.
