The final paperback begins with Shoya critically injured after saving Shoko and with their friendships in pieces. This completes the seven-volume standard run, so it is the endpoint for readers collecting the singles. Shoko's determination to recover what she believes she damaged gives the closing stage its immediate problem. Come to it through the previous volumes: her sense of responsibility is part of the conflict, not an explanation a new reader should accept at face value.

Returning to the movie project gives the ending a practical scale. Kodansha describes the scattered friends coming back together to make their film, putting renewed cooperation alongside the aftermath of Shoya saving Shoko. A shared task is a more convincing measure of change than treating a rescue as instant forgiveness: people still have to work together after the exceptional act. That does not establish that every injury is resolved, or that Shoko was responsible for the original breakdown. The final volume's premise supports a narrower hope, that the group can build something without requiring one person to carry the entire account of its past.
