Both descriptions begin after Tetsuo has freed Akira and both send competing forces after the child, so recognizing the plot does not identify the binding. The Hardcover Collection also uses the updated translation and lettering associated with the anniversary box set, according to Kodansha. That makes it an edition decision rather than an extra installment between paperbacks. The pursuit itself rests on a failure of containment: frozen imprisonment has ended, but the institutions involved still treat finding Akira as their route to preventing destruction.
