The penultimate Akira paperback returns to the Great Tokyo Empire as outside military forces prepare to confront it. The paperback is 408 pages; Hardcover Collection Vol. 5 is 416 pages and belongs to the separately sold hardcover run. Both carry the empire confrontation in their publisher descriptions. If this is a replacement for a missing paperback, check the format before ordering: the number alone does not distinguish the two, and neither is a sequel to the other.

The military buildup is not the reason to buy the run as a collection of self-contained battles. This is the penultimate book, and the empire already depends on the destruction and political rearrangement in the preceding volumes. Its useful tension is between organized force outside the city and a regime built around people whose powers keep expanding. Kodansha leaves the adequacy of the military response as a question, not a victory promised by the premise. On the shelf, the same confrontation appears in two editions. The hardcover adds an explicitly advertised right-to-left format and original sound effects; it does not supply the next stage of the story after this paperback.
