The Ancient Magus’ Bride begins with a purchase that complicates its promise of refuge. Chise Hatori, an orphan troubled by visions, is sold to an inhuman mage. That transaction is the starting condition for the magical apprenticeship, and a reason to approach the book as something less comfortable than a wish to escape ordinary life. Start here for the relationship whose terms the later books keep testing.

Chise arrives in the magical world through slavery, so the apprenticeship begins with a question of dependence before it can become a question of skill. Reading the purchase only as rescue gives the buyer credit for improving circumstances while ignoring how much authority the transaction grants him. The opening deserves the opposite emphasis: a better place can still leave its occupant with very little choice. That is the useful reason to own the beginning rather than reconstruct it from later explanations. Every promise of belonging has to be measured against the condition under which Chise entered.
