Chise’s magical talent becomes a liability in The Ancient Magus’ Bride’s second book. Her life as an apprentice has given the formerly unwanted child a place in a world that includes fae royalty. The label sleigh beggy also identifies an extraordinary capacity for magic. Continue here for the qualification attached to that apparent good fortune: becoming valuable to a magical world need not make a person safe within it.

The danger attached to Chise’s abilities changes what an apprenticeship can promise. Learning to use power would be a simple path upward if possession of that power were itself harmless. Seven Seas instead pairs her exceptional capacity with a cruel fate, putting a cost beneath the fantasy of discovering hidden worth. The point is not that talent secretly makes someone less deserving of care. It is that admiration for what Chise can generate is an inadequate response to what having that capacity may do to her. Recognition and protection are separate obligations.
