The Trost defense finishes in chapters 5 to 9, and the premise changes with it. Vol. 1 sold a siege: three walls, a shrinking population, no way out. These four chapters answer the question that volume ends on, and the answer resets what the series is about for the thirty-two books after it. The detail belongs in the section below. Season 1 covers chapters 1 to 34, so a viewer from the anime has seen all of it. Kodansha lists 192 pages at $10.99, the shape almost every volume after the first holds to. Anyone who wants Trost in one sitting should look at Omnibus 1 instead, which carries chapters 1 to 13.

Eren is swallowed on the last page of Vol. 1 and believed dead for much of this one, which is the first run of a structure the series reuses: remove the assumption, then show the mechanism underneath. The rogue Titan tearing through the others is him, and Mikasa's childhood is set out in the same book so that the reunion has weight rather than only shock. Chapter 8 is titled Roar and chapter 9 is The Beating of a Heart Can Be Heard, which is the earliest sign that Isayama titles chapters for the image rather than the event. The Japanese volume reached print on 16 July 2010, four months after the first. Omnibus 1 collects chapters 1 to 13 for less than the price of two single volumes.
