Final Season Part 3 (The Final Chapters) ep. 88–94

Chapters 135 to 139, 256 pages against the usual 192, and the only volume in this series where the book and the magazine tell different endings. Chapter 139 ran in the magazine on 9 April 2021 and stopped short of where this book stops. Isayama added pages for the collected edition that carry the story past the point the serialization ended, and those pages are most of what the argument about the ending is actually about. Anyone who followed the magazine has not read this volume. The English edition arrived on 19 October 2021 and closes every format at once: Box Set 7, Colossal Edition 7 and Omnibus 12 all end here.

The added pages are why the ending reads differently depending on where you met it. Generations pass, a modernized Shiganshina is destroyed in a war fought without Titans, and a child and a dog walk up to a tree grown over the grave into the shape of the one Ymir fell into. Nothing in it shows Titan power returning and the image suggests it anyway. Our ending explainer works through those pages and finds that readers calling the ending bleak and readers calling it honest are usually pointing at the same handful. Mikasa's death of old age is in this volume too. The Japanese volume shipped on 9 June 2021.
