The Female Titan arc opens across chapters 23 to 26, in 208 pages rather than the usual 192. The expedition leaves, the formation fails, and the trap in the forest closes; none of it resolves in this book. Buying it alone is not the way to read it, and the arc it starts does not finish until Vol. 8. Season 1 covers chapters 1 to 34, so the anime has been through all of it. Colossal Edition 2 begins here, collecting Vols. 6 to 10, which means the oversized edition and the box sets cut the run at different places and a reader mixing formats will duplicate or skip chapters.
Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.
The forest sequence is the first time the series makes its own mechanics the subject. Levi's technique for stunning a Titan without the killing blow is shown in detail because the arc is about capturing rather than killing, and the reader has to believe capture is possible. What the volume withholds is the point: the Female Titan is clearly intelligent, clearly hunting Eren, and clearly somebody the reader has already met, and Isayama lets that sit unnamed for two more volumes. Chapter 24 is titled The Titan Forest and chapter 25 is Bite. The Japanese volume shipped on 9 December 2011.
