Berserk Volume 1 introduces Guts as the Black Swordsman, already marked for sacrifice and pursuing revenge. The premise begins with damage already done: his iron hand, enormous sword and Brand precede any explanation of how he acquired them. Puck accompanies a fighter who gives little indication that he wants company. This is the standard paperback opening; Deluxe 1 collects this material alongside standard Volumes 2 and 3.

Beginning with an injured adult makes revenge the starting problem rather than the reward for completing an origin story. PRH's description identifies the Brand as something that attracts hostile forces: carrying a weapon does not let Guts choose when danger arrives. Puck also makes the apparent solitude less complete than the Black Swordsman label suggests. That combination is a more useful reason to start here than the publisher's promise of extreme violence. The opening asks what survival looks like when the body carries an invitation to the next attack.
