Berserk Volume 34 continues the confrontation between Griffith's forces and the transformed Kushan emperor. The publisher places Midland's civilians in view of the fighters who claim to be rescuing them, making the battle's appearance politically important. It begins Deluxe 12's collection of standard Volumes 34 through 36. This is a continuation of the struggle over Midland, not a separate introduction to Griffith's army or the people seeking refuge from the war.

A rescuer's usefulness and a rescuer's nature can become difficult to separate under immediate threat. PRH describes Griffith's troops exposing their inhuman forms in order to fight the emperor in front of Midland's people. The civilians are therefore asked to interpret protection supplied by beings who also look terrifying. Protection can create a claim to legitimacy before those receiving it have a safe opportunity to decide what kind of power they are accepting. Immediate danger leaves little room for a free judgment about the people offering relief.
