Berserk Volume 42 continues the story under Studio Gaga, supervised by Kouji Mori, after Miura's final volume. The publisher's premise places Griffith on Elf Island and the travelers facing the loss of its safety. Read it as the next installment after standard Volume 41. Deluxe 14 collects Volumes 40 and 41 with the Official Guidebook, so finishing that hardcover brings you to this paperback's preceding material rather than including this continuation.

The place sought for protection becomes the place from which the party may need to flee. PRH describes Griffith's arrival, destructive forces beneath the island and escape by ship as the remaining possibility. That change matters because reaching sanctuary had been the practical objective of the journey. The premise now tests whether safety can persist against a power that crosses into it. The journey had given the group a destination around which to organize care. A threat inside that destination changes the problem from reaching protection to preserving the people who reached it. Arrival no longer answers the practical question of where they can stay.
