Bleach Volume 9 opens with Ichigo's group in the passage toward Soul Society. Chapters 71–79 continue the rescue journey after the previous standard book, beginning with a transit route that becomes dangerous before the party reaches its destination. The licensed opening checked here ends during their escape attempt, so later gate and entry events remain unread. Box Set 1 already contains this standard volume; the third three-in-one omnibus also overlaps it alongside the preceding two books.

The passage makes familiar fighting instincts unreliable. Ichigo reaches for his sword when Uryu is caught, but Yoruichi warns that the surrounding current entangles spiritual entities and would swallow the weapon too. Chad instead pulls Uryu free and carries him, even as Uryu insists he can run. Knowing the route helps Yoruichi name the hazards; it does not stop a further cleaner from arriving at an unexpected time. With the exit close and the threat gaining, Orihime raises a shield. The resulting force propels the group toward the opening, but the checked pages end before a landing or a judgment of safety. The sequence gives different people different useful actions. Rescue depends on accepting an interruption of pride and on recognizing when the tool usually associated with strength would worsen the problem.
