Chainsaw Man begins with Denji taking dangerous work because he cannot afford to refuse it. His partner is Pochita, a devil, and the immediate problem is debt. Start here if the title suggests only a spectacular weapon: money and the small pleasures it could buy supply the opening motive. This is the standard first volume, so a new reader can try the premise without committing to a collection.

Poverty gives the transformation a different weight from a conventional invitation to greatness. VIZ's description places betrayal between Denji's unpaid obligations and his acquisition of devil power. Read that arrangement as a warning about the terms on which an apparent escape is offered: receiving the means to fight does not establish that the fighter has gained control of his life. The useful reason to choose this opening book is the mismatch between the extravagant body promised by the title and the modest life Denji wants to purchase with it.
