Denji's fight with the Bat Devil puts a very small desire against a very large risk. This is an early continuation for readers following his motives, with bodily appetite supplying the reason to keep fighting. The contrast matters more than the opponent's name when deciding whether the series suits you. If you want heroic ambition to arrive already respectable, Denji's priorities make this a poor substitute for that kind of adventure.

VIZ frames the Bat Devil confrontation around Denji's hope of touching a breast, then questions whether obtaining that reward can satisfy him. The crude objective is analytically useful because it refuses to let survival and fulfillment become synonyms. A dangerous achievement can have an embarrassingly narrow purpose; that does not make the danger imaginary. This volume is therefore a useful early test of the series' bargain with its reader. The action asks for investment in someone whose reasons may be inadequate, without supplying a nobler motive to make the investment comfortable.
