Dragon Ball Z 1 resumes Toriyama’s original manga after the earlier English Dragon Ball run. A visitor from space interrupts the peace, and the paperback begins a new English numbering sequence. Its printed contents call the ten chapters Tales 1–10 within Z. Start with Dragon Ball 1 for the original story’s beginning; this book follows that sixteen-volume singles run. Z VIZBIG 1 collects Z singles 1–3, and the complete Z box holds all twenty-six. Either repeats this paperback when bought alongside it. The analysis below stays within the licensed opening chapter rather than reviewing the whole book.

Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.

The opening removes the gap between an ordinary person and a practiced fighter before Goku even enters the encounter. A farmer points a gun at Raditz; Piccolo later attacks with a blast. Neither response can protect its user. Raditz’s measuring device makes that similarity explicit by turning each opponent into a small number, while his insults treat resistance as an inconvenience. Piccolo’s admission after Raditz leaves is more revealing than the failed attack: he recognizes that fear prevented him from moving. His experience has not made him immune to the ordinary person’s predicament. The chapter therefore changes what strength means by making a former threat inhabit the position of someone threatened. That is an opening-scene reading, not an explanation of the later alliance or battle. VIZ’s licensed preview supplies printed pages 5–19; the contents page establishes the book’s Z chapter range.
